Food Bank Project

Over the last few months Bradford Central Lions Club and Save the Mothers Trust [SMT] have come across a number of individuals as well as families with very young children who are suffering extreme hardship due to the cutbacks imposed in the benefit system. Some of these people have not eaten for several days and have gone to the extent not having the basic heating and electricity simply so that they are able to feed their children.

Having conducted some research into this area our finding were that there are also some individuals and families who depend wholly on ‘soup kitchens’ and ‘food banks’ run in the city by various groups. Bradford Central Lions Club and Save the Mothers Trust [SMT] have joined forces in bringing forth a ‘Food Bank’, this will help those living within our city that are less fortunate than ourselves

Why do people need emergency food?

Today people across the UK will struggle to feed themselves and their families. Redundancy, illness, benefit delay, domestic violence, debt, family breakdown and paying for the additional costs of heating during winter are just some of the reasons why people go hungry. “We had to borrow a tin of soup from next door to stop our 18-month-old daughter from going to bed hungry.” ‘If there was no food bank I’d have to steal something to feed my family.’
